Fall Green Programs

Green Home Retrofit for Energy Performance and Moisture Control

This workshop will inform the attendees on simple interventions that decrease the cost of space conditioning - heating and cooling. Increasing building tightness may reduce indoor air quality and so the presenter will discuss the importance of controlling air flow and assessing moisture conditions when insulating walls, basements and attics.

Life Cycle Costing for Green Projects

The webinar will walk the attendee through the convention for calculating Life Cycle Costs to evaluate the economic perfrmance of building investments through Present Value, adjusted Internal Rate of Return factors with an example of the LCC costs of competing HVAC systems.

Daylight Modeling with Daysim

This hands-on workshop requires attendees to bring their own laptop (and surge protector). The presenters will discuss the Daylighting parameters and to apply one of the foremost Daylight Modeling Tool in buildng design.

Integrating Daysim into eQuest

This hands-on workshop requires attendees to bring their own laptop (and surge protector). It is strongly recommended that attendees attend the morning session on Daysim, daylight modeling class or have prior knowledge of Daysim. eQuest is a foremost energy modeling tool that is used in most high performance green buildings and also LEED certified projects. The workshop will inform the attendee on how to transfer the data from Daysim modeling into eQuest to calculate Daylighting savings in the energy modeling.

Nadav MalinNadav Malin is the building industry’s acknowledged go-to resource when you need thoughtful perspective on the materials and design solutions that define sustainable building practice.

As president of BuildingGreen, he oversees the company’s industry-leading information and community-building resources, including Environmental Building News, its sister publication GreenSpec, and the project certification help tool LEEDuser. He also lends his technical expertise and vision to McGraw-Hill Construction, serving as executive editor of the award-winning GreenSource magazine.

When the LEED rating system was just starting out, Nadav was tapped to lead its new Materials and Resources Technical Advisory Group, which he chaired throughout LEED’s formative years. A long-serving member of the national LEED Faculty, he is a sought-after speaker for USGBC, AIA, and CSI events, and as a consultant to architecture firms and government agencies alike.

Nadav led the team that created the U.S. Department of Energy’s High Performance Buildings Database, and continues to oversee BuildingGreen’s responsibility for ensuring the quality of case studies and collecting meaningful data on actual building performance.

Moisture Management of Low Energy Houses (Retrofits & New Builds)

8am - Noon, Citywide Training Facility, 750 Piedmont Road Room A, Columbus, OH 43224

This four hour workshop addressed moisture management issues for a whole house, from roof to basement, when retrofitting existing (gut rehab) or building new energy efficient homes.

The speaker, Joseph Lstiburek, Ph.D., P.Eng., ASHRAE Fellow, is a principal of Building Science Corporation. Dr. Lstiburek has appeared on PBS NOVA ("Can buildings make you sick?").

He is the author of the U.S. DOE Handbook on Moisture Control and a special contributor to the EPA guidance document on Building Air Quality: A Guide for Building Owners and Facility Managers. He is one of the world's foremost authorities on energy efficient construction techniques and heads one of the four Building America program teams for the U.S. Department of Energy.

Dr. Lstiburek has written numerous books and technical papers on building construction. He is the best selling author of the Builder Guides and has over 50 technical and journal articles to his credit. He has conducted forensic investigations and served as an expert witness on building failures all over the U.S. He is an expert in the areas of rain penetration, air barriers, vapor barriers, air quality, durability and construction technology.

Join CGBF and OSU's CSM class on Green Building and Sustainable Construction for a Rain Garden tour & discussion. Stephanie Suter, Chair, Central Ohio Rain Garden Initiative (CORGI) will walk us through three rain gardens. We will meet at the Boat launch area right across from the impound lot (turn sharp left at the Scioto Audubon Metro Park sign and go downhill to the boat launch area). The tour will start at 10am.

At 11am we will tour Grange Insurance Audubon Center. The 18,000 square foot Grange Insurance Audubon Center is a "green building," certified under national Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria. It uses geothermal heating and cooling, a plant-filled green roof, recycled materials and other sustainable construction materials to reduce the center's carbon footprint.

This program is organized by CGBF and is a part of CSM 694, Green Building and Sustainable Construction Fall quarter course at OSU.


2009 Tour of Lazarus rooftop garden:
The former downtown Lazarus department store has been renovated to Gold LEED standards and is being used as office space for over 2000 workers. One important feature is the rooftop garden and rainwater recycling system.

Ohio Green Schools Summit

Ohio School Facilities Commission's Green School’s guidelines require at least LEED Silver rating for all OSFC funded projects. These high performance schools will integrate daylighting, indoor air quality and energy efficiency to run efficiently, save money, protect natural resources and provide superior visual, acoustical, and thermal comfort.

The Ohio Green Schools Summit explored the implementation of Ohio’s newly adopted LEED standards for school facilities design. Two days of seminars conducted by national experts provided an exciting new opportunity to participate in and provide a safe, quality and inspiring environment for Ohio’s children!

The Central Ohio Youth Summit on the Environment was held concurrently with Sustainability Now! This Summit is for youth interested in the environment and in affecting change in their community.


The LEED-Home project
The LEED-Home project, a design-build partnership between CGBF and a local high school, broke ground in December 2005. The project is currently poised at Gold rating level with a strong potential to be a LEED Platinum! At Platinum it will be only the second home in the country currently at this level.

CGBF has built a green cutting edge home in Columbus' first green residential development, Greenview Estates.
The project team, represented by Meera Parthasarathy and Kate Harkin, presented the project scope and goals at the US Green Building Council's Greenbuild in Chicago on November 5, 2007. The project was one of seven in the afternoon's charrette presentation and had a team of ten green residential experts from around the country brainstorming ideas for greening the CGBF project.

Green Building Tour
A tour of green buildings and alternative energy sites in Richland County was offered in conjunction with the Environmental Education Council of Ohio's annual conference. The tour and green building professional issue forum featured Mohican School in the Out of Doors, Malabar Farm's Visitor Center, and the Gorman Nature Center. Active and passive solar, geothermal and wind systems will be on display, along with a green roof and composting toilets.

Green Affordable Housing Charrette!
CGBF conducted a charrette to inform the design-build process for our second Green home to be built in fall 2007. The charette identified the project goals for the second build in terms of building design, technologies, materials, energy use and site design. Our eventual goal is to build a zero energy home and we would like to ramp up to this by incorporating cutting edge green design and technologies.
